Fun Music Lesson



Paper Plate Ice Skating in 1st Grade & Kindergarten

This is one of my favorite lessons for January. The children are skating to wonderful Art music called the Skaters Waltz. They are having fun skating to the beat of 3/4 time while listening to classical music. I also like to get them learning about glissandos by showing them how my toy penguin can slide up and down the Orff instruments.  Then they get to pretend that their mallets are penguins sliding up and down the instruments. Music Symbol Game

My class loves an exciting game called the Swat Game. I love it because it helps my class instantly learn their music symbols.
I like to use the music symbol cards in this game as vocabulary flash cards to help my class learn new music symbols.


This is an elimination game to see who can quickly find the music symbol 1st. I've also used this this game to help my class review their musical symbols when I use a substitute teacher. I know that my class will have fun with this music game even when I can't be at work. Composing Music

Composing Music is a great way to help your students develop their musical skills. I use a lot of rhythm cards in my classroom to help my class practice rhythms that they will need for composing their own music. Below are a few ways my students like to use rhythm cards to compose their own rhythm compositions and musical songs.



Creating melodies by using rhythms cards and boom whackers.

Students will go around the circle performing one card at a time to create a song. Then they will make up their own rhythms around the circle to finish their composition. Music Centers

Happy New Year!

I hope everyone had a great Holiday Season! Christmas break is almost done and now it's time to start thinking about going back to work. The students are super excited about seeing each other and talking about their Christmas holiday, so I usually give my classes a fun day by setting up fun music centers the first week back to school.

Music centers allow the class to play music games, have fun together and review music material before they jump back into the quick pace of learning new material.
